The White Bat preview

Dancework Production is bringing a new ballet performance to the stage of Istana Budaya to kickstart the year of 2012.

The White Bat is an original ballet choreographed by Malaysian choreographer Jie Choong Wan Chin based on the music from the famous opera Die Fledermaus (The Bat) composed by Viennese composer Johann Strauss in 1874.

Jie Choong Wan Chin, a Malaysian based in Japan has co-founded the Ena Ballet Studio Company in Japan with Ena Hirose in 2006. She has created numerous short pieces and full-length works such as Carmen, Cinderella and the latest, The White Bat.

Featuring dancers from around the world, The White Bat comprises 13 foreign dancers from UK, Australia, Japan and also 15 local dancers.

The story line written by Vu Dang, an Australian Vietnamese origin tells the story about repressed housewife Bella who was neglected by her husband Jonathan. Bella turns to the Bat who appears at night and follows him to the Nightingale Club where Bella is turned into a gorgeous and alluring woman.

Playing the role of Bella, principle dancer Ena Hirose from Japan is no foreign to the Malaysian stage as she has performed in some of the renowned dance performances such as Carmen and Don Quixote staged at Istana Budaya last year.

Dance lovers should be familiar with Dancework Production as they have produced several well-received dance productions in the past like the classical pieces such as Don Quixote, Paguita Grand pas classic, pas de deuxs and new full-length choreographies in neoclassical style such as Carmen and The White Bat.

During the press conference held on 28 December 2011, the multi-national cast has shown promising quality of work with their lively performance and elegant dance moves.

While pursuing the arts, Dancework Production will also raise funds for several charitable organizations. Part of the proceeds from the performance will be donated to Lion’s Lyfeline Leukaemia Fund, Yayasan Sin Chew, Living Hope Malaysia, Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation, Persatuan SLE Malaysia, SPCA and Hospis Malaysia.

Tuneful score, energetic choreography topped with world-class dancers from around the world, expect nothing less than spectacular during the 2-day performances at Istana Budaya this 7th and 8th January 2012.
